Just buy a billboard, Baby.

03Dec09

The Oakland Raiders are the laughing stock of the NFL and with the exception of the Clippers, maybe all of pro sports. It’s no secret that Al Davis and his bizarre hiring practices have turned a once-great team into a joke. Just turn on sports radio here and it won’t take long to realize the love/hate relationship the fans in Oakland have with the team.

So really, the only thing that surprised me about fans taking out a billboard pleading with Davis to hire a real GM is that it took this long.

The billboard was paid for by fan donations to the MessageToAl.com website. And if it gets Davis to hire someone who knows what he’s doing, it’s worth every penny of the $5,500 it took to rent the board for a month.

Is this a new trend? As AdFreak pointed out, Notre Dame fans took out a billboard mocking coach Charlie Weiss and head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Dick Jauron, was fired not long after Bills fans took out a billboard calling for his dismissal.

It’s a great movement. Why not democratize advertising more. It’s like giant analog version of internet community voices.

This is a tough “target market” to crack. Al didn’t care enough about the fans to keep him from moving the team twice (and annually threatening to do it again). So I’m not sure this emotional appeal will motivate him.

Although he does respond to billboards. I heard that he fired Gruden in part because he was enraged to see a billboard with his Gruden’s face on it (as opposed to Al’s/Players, I guess).
