Cadbury “Spots vs Stripes” – what am I missing?

Fun spot by Cadbury. Nice animation. Kept me watching. But… for what? Am I missing something or does this have absolutely zero to do with selling candy bars? I thought maybe there was more I hadn’t seen, so I went over to and… nope. Nothing. They obviously spent hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of dollars creating this. The big question is why?

    From website FAQ:

    What is Spots v Stripes?

Cadbury has created Spots v Stripes, the biggest, most funnest game ever to celebrate their role as Official Treat Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We want to get the nation in the mood for London 2012 by splitting everyone into two teams Spots and Stripes, and play against each other in our big game.

It doesn’t matter what game you play. Any game counts, from hopscotch to Balloon Bellyflop and everything in between. We’re providing loads of games, challenges and events for you to play, winning prizes and points along the way. You can win points for your own games too. Points are either automatically awarded or claimed online. All points go towards your personal and side’s total scores with Spots v Stripes scores updated in real time on our scoreboard. Ultimately the side with the most points wins. Although it’s really about rediscovering the joy of playing games!

Yeah, but what does any of that have to do with selling product? Or how is it tied to the brand in any way?
