Copywriting tips from David Ogilvy.

27Sep10

It seems like more and more these days, ad agencies and creatives are getting farther and farther away from advertising that actually sells. Creatives are satisfied to create 27 seconds of unrelated comedy and then slap a logo on the end. Or they’ll do a 3-minute web video that barely shows the product and never once gives anyone a reason to buy it.

That’s why I LOVE this post on David Ogilvy’s 7 Tips for Writing Copy That Sells.

All seven tips are must-reads for any creative out there. And while you may think of them as outdated or quaint in today’s ad culture, they’re actually more important than ever. Each of the tips features an Ogilvy quote, including my second favorite advertising quote of all time:

If it doesn’t sell, it isn’t creative. -David Ogilvy

My favorite advertising quote of all time (since I know you’re dying to know)?

“Advertising is what you do when you can’t go see someone. That’s all it is.” -Fairfax Cone
