Social media bullshit.

03Sep09

I’m as big a proponent of social media as anyone. But when it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Case in point: This video by Eric Qualman that’s made the rounds recently. It’s pretty and hip and makes you say “Wow! Social media is, like, totally HUGE!” It’s also a rip off of someone else’s concept and mostly false.

Robert Cole was one of those people who thought it was too good to be true. So he double checked the facts and found all sorts of errors and untruths (usually referred to as lies). Check out his blog post that does an awesome job of breaking it all down.

Exposed and properly chastised, Eric Qualman admitted his errors and fixed the spot. Oh wait, no he didn’t. He spent an insanely long time trying to argue that he was right. Read through his Stepford Husband-like responses every time someone points out that he was lying.

“Howard – thanks for the interest. Keep the feedback/comments/challenges coming as it will only make version 2 that much stronger. Thanks again for the interest/help! Have a great weekend.”

Eric, buddy – there shouldn’t be a version 2. YOU MADE SHIT UP. None of these people are correcting you to be friendly. They’re doing it because you LIED. And on top of that, you got slapped repeatedly for stealing the idea (and even the exact same music) from someone else. It’s mind boggling to watch you try to simply slap a 2-second credit on the end of your video and think it’s all ok.

You know the worst part? Read all his supporters who, despite everyone pointing out the lies in his video, respond with “Great stuff! I’m going to repost this everywhere!” I guess a social media sucker is born every minute.

Eric did all this to sell his new book. I’m not going to link to that, because I refuse to give him any more press. But let’s just say that anyone buying that book better realize it’s considered fiction after this little video fiasco.
